Dear Nitinji,
Is there any raga with the following notes? Sa, Re (shudh), Ga (shudh) , Ma (teevra), Dha (komal), Ni (komal) Sa , will that be a raga, because it will sound the same whichever note we take as Sa. ? ( It is called moorchana I think). I mean shouldn't there be at least one gap of one half note for a raga?
Thank you so much Nitinji.
A very interesting question indeed.
I will answer the question in two parts.
Firstly, your contention that the raga will remain the same from any swara is not really correct. Even if each swara starting from SA – RE – GA – MA – dh – ni – and SA is two half notes apart, the intervals are not identical in the natural scale. They will be identical only in the tempered scale. For the natural scale, the intervals change quite significantly.
Secondly, to my knowledge, there is no raga containing the swara mentioned by you. The Raga concept is based on the division of the Saptak in Poorvanga and Uttaranga. And then exploiting the symmetry between the two. This gives usable harmonic pairings, which is essential for a raga to be developed. This possibility does not exist in the set given by you.
